KapCon and Covid-19

Because of the threat of Covid our con will be a bit different this year. The big change is that we're trying to limit mass gatherings on the main floor, which means limiting announcements. As part of this, we're not doing scoring or prizes this year, because that means prizegiving, which means everyone in a room cheering. While things are normalish in NZ, we're playing this on the safe side, and trying to avoid risk. We're also duplicating the game and timetable info - "the wall of games" - so people don't have to congregate in one place to see what's on.

There'll be a QR code on the upstairs entrance and on the main floor. Please scan in each day. We'll also have hand sanitiser in multiple areas so you can decontaminate. Our registration spreadsheet provides pretty good info for contact-tracing, but we're hoping no-one needs to use it for that purpose.

Obviously: if you are sick, please let us know by email or on the KapPhone (022 341 5067) and stay home. We will provide a full refund. If you're a GM, don't stress - we will cope.

Also obviously: wash your hands!

We hope that none of this is necessary. As of today, the shields are still holding. But we want to run a safe con and that means planning for the worst just in case. Hopefully it'll just be this year, and next year things will be back to normal.

KapCon 2021: Initial call for games

The KapCon dragon has awoken. A little late this year, thanks to the pandemic and lockdown, but we're looking for games for our initial lineup for next year's con. We will only run if it is safe to do so (so we have to be in level 1, with no lockdowns, social distancing or public gathering restrictions), but for the moment we're assuming / hoping that that will be the case in January and planning accordingly. We'll be keeping an eye on the situation, and are aware that we may have to cancel the whole thing if there is another outbreak. That's just the world we live in now I guess.

We've already contacted the GMs who boldly offered games in the immediate aftermath of the con in January, but if you're interested in running something, then please log in and fill out the form.

We need about eight sessions of tabletop plus a few small (8-12 player) larps in each early round before we can open in early November. The sooner we get those games, the sooner we can open. We're trying to ensure we have plenty of teen-friendly offerings this year for Adventure Squad graduates, so if your game is teen-friendly, please tag it as such.

We do not currently have a flagship larp. If anyone wants to run something that meets our criteria (broad appeal, 3 hours, ~40 players), then please get in contact with "kapcon@gmail.com". If we cannot find a larp, we will simply run round 4 with extra tabletop.

I look forward to seeing your offerings.

2020 small larp signups are open

Updated 5 jan 2020: Updated number of player spots.

Registration for small larps is now open. We don't have very many this year, so space is limited (of course if you want to offer one, you can submit it via the usual form). Here's what we've got:

Note that Hypoxia takes up two rounds, with a one-round workshop followed by one round of game. You will need to sign up for both to play.

If you'd like to register for any of these, please email me on kapcon@gmail.com. As with tabletops, I'll be running a "shark week" with random allocation if there is too much demand, after which it is first come, first served. If you are a GM, you can beat the system by exercising a GM pick (so GM a game, people :)

Updated 10/12/2019: Added "It Ain't Easy Being Gilled".

Call for small larps

This year we are not offering a flagship, but we are seeking small larps to run as part of the normal gaming stream.

Our game-spaces are school classrooms. While they can fit 20 people for a larp, it gets a bit crowded, so 12 or less is probably a better number. We can offer more space in round 4 (the old flagship round), since there are usually people who skip the evening. So if there’s a couple of people wanting to run 20-player games in that slot, we can probably make it work.

We can access the NZLARPS Wellington gear library for set dressing, there’s not a lot of time between games to set dress and pack up, so low-prop games probably work better. We can take signups for your game if it requires costume of pre-casting.

We would like to run at least one small larp per round, so that’s at least 7 games. If you have something you think works, then please fill out the form here

Its tomorrow!

KapCon is tomorrow! Doors open at around 8:15am, and the first session starts at 9. We've had some last minute registrations, which brings the final pre-registration count to a round one hundred adults - plus 18 adventure squaddies who registered by email. So, we officially have an adventure horde on Sunday. I hope we have enough dragons for them to slay.

On Sunday, doors will open ~9:15, and the first session will start at 10, to give everyone a bit of a sleep-in.

The registration form has been disabled, and the KapCon account will not be monitored over the weekend, because I will be gaming. If you're onsite, do it at the desk. If you're offsite, then I'm basicly reading stuff at midnight on Saturday after the larp, or on Sunday morning before the con. I'll catch up with stuff afterwards; hopefully I won't miss anything important.

KapCon needs more games

TL;DR: We need a few more games, plus surge protection. Numbers follow.

Calling for those last few games! As I've mentioned, registrations are low - currently we have just 81, plus 14 squaddies on Sunday. I am currently expecting a total attendance of ~130: basicly, one or two registrations per day, plus 20 walk-ins. And I need cover in case signups increase or that last number is 30 rather than 20. Which means: we need a few more games, plus some surge protection.

Here's what we've got:
Round 1: 70 (11 games) + 12 GOD
Round 2: 69 (12 games) + 12 GOD
Round 3: 43 (8 games) + 12 GOD
Round 4: 6 (1 game) + 12 GOD
Round 5: 53 (10 games) + 12 GOD + AS
Round 6: 61 (10 games) + 12 GOD + AS
Round 7: 36 (6 games) + 12 GOD

(Note that not everyone attends every session, so I have 26 vacant slots in rounds 1 and 2, which fits well with the number of signups we expect)

Based on past cons of similar size, usual demand patterns, and accounting for Adventure Squad soaking parents on Sunday. I think we need 75 / 75 / 50 / 25 / 65 / 70 / 45. Which means we need: 1 more game in rounds 1,2 and 3, 1 or 2 more games in round 4 (the larp session, and the one with the biggest uncertainty), 2 more in rounds 5,6 and 7 (though the latter is often dealt with by GMs getting enthusiastic on the day). In addition, we need at least one surge protection game for every round (we have 3 GMs who have volunteered to run all 6 sessions if they have to, and that's half our surge protection covered. But we want to give them a chance to play, and they'd probably be running in GoD anyway).

If you can help, either email me at kapcon@gmail.com, or fill out the form here: http://kapcon.org.nz/?q=node/add/game

One month to go!

Its one month till KapCon. Have you registered yet?

Currently signups are a little slow, but we're expecting them to pick up over the xmas break. Meanwhile we're still looking for games to round out our timetable, so if you'd like to offer something, please fill out the form here.

There are still spaces in our flagship larp, The Storm, but not for much longer: the logistics of larps mean that the GM will soon have to make decisions on which characters to cut. So, if you want to play it, sign up here.

Preliminary timetable

The preliminary timetable is up! You can view it here.

Room assignments aren't final, and there will likely be some changes over the next week (in particular, as we add the last few games), but most things should stay in the same slot.

Small larp signup is open / general update

Small larp signup for KapCon 2018 is now open. If you'd like to sign up for any of the larps being run on Sunday, then please fill out the form here:

I'm using a form this year because its easier than emails. As usual, I'll be running a "shark week" for larps, and if anything is over-subscribed, allocating spaces randomly. If there are still spaces after that, then its first come, first-served.

Also, as a general con update: we now have over 50 registrations. We're most of the way towards filling the timetable, but we'll still need ~15 more sessions of gaming to fill out the con, including a few more games in rounds one and two. I expect those will drift in over the next month, so no panic yet. But if you'd like to save me from running around with my hair on fire later, the best way of doing so is to run a game.

KapCon 2018 is open for registration!

As usual, we'll be doing this "shark week" style, with games allocated on preferences after a week. So there's no need to rush the form in a giant gaming frenzy.

We're still after games, so if you'd like to run something, please fill out the form here. The structure of KapCon means that on average everyone needs to run a game, so please do your bit.

If you've forgotten your username or are having trouble logging in, please email kapcon@gmail.com.
