Flagship wanted for Kapcon 2018

Kapcon needs a flagship larp for 2018. We thought we had one - Winter has a great idea for a supernatural western larp. But they've been unable to assemble a team around the idea, and let us know that we probably need to look at alternatives. So: does anyone want to write a flagship game for us? Or have a suitable one lying around that is fresh(ish) to Kapcon attendees we can (re)run?

To summarise our flagship expectations: we're looking for 50-60 players, suitable for a broad audience (including some 13-16 year olds), with an equal gender ratio and fitting on a floor of WHS. Please contact "kapcon@gmail.com" ASAP if you are interested.

Kapcon 2017 last-minute notices

Less than two days to go until Kapcon! So here's some last-minute notices:

  • People will be at the venue for setup from 10am on Friday. If you'd like to pitch in, head down (better yet, tell us first, then head down, so Morgan has some idea of how many pairs of hands he has)
  • Precon drinks are at the Southern Cross, 39 Abel Smith St, from 17:30. There's a Facebook event for it here: https://www.facebook.com/events/109637262879598/
  • Doors open on Saturday at 8am, and first round starts at 9am. We'll have the usual setup of a paid and unpaid queue. Rounds will run 9 - 12; 1 - 4 and 5 - 8, with the flagship larp "That's a Wrap" starting at 8:30. If you're not larping, Games on Demand and round 4 will be happening on the upper floor. We need to vacate the venue immediately afterwards, as there's an alarm which kicks in at midnight.
  • On Sunday doors open at 9, and first round starts at 10. Rounds run 10 - 1 and 2 - 5. There'll be a prize ceremony at ~5:30, and the final (unscored) round will run from 6 - 9, at the same time as the "cleanup larp".
  • On both days you will be able to order pizza for dinner. Order forms will be at the front desk. Place your order during the morning round or the lunch break, and your pizza will be waiting for you at the end of the afternoon round. We'll also have an assortment of snacks and drinks available at the desk. Kapcon doesn't do EFTPOS, so please bring cash.
  • Bryn from Games & Hobbies will be there between rounds on Saturday and maybe on Sunday if you want to buy boardgames or dice. He doesn't do EFTPOS either, so again, bring cash.
  • Postcon drinks will be at the Southern Cross again, in the function room, from 8:30pm Sunday onwards. There's a Facebook event for it here: https://www.facebook.com/events/644226122446630/
  • Have fun, everyone.

Small larp signup is open

Registration for small larps is now open. We don't have very many this year, so space is limited (of course if you want to offer one, you can submit it via the usual form).

We're not running any larps in rounds 1 or 2 this year because of the Megagame, but we've got stuff in later rounds. Specifically:

If you'd like to register, please email me on kapcon@gmail.com. As with tabletops, I'll be running a "shark week" with allocation on preferences (for round 3 at least), after which it is first come, first served. If you are a GM, you can beat the system by exercising a GM pick (so GM a game, people :)

An apology

One of our attendees has pointed out that, at Kapcon this year, we gendered the unisex bathrooms on the top floor of the convention. This made some of our trans and non-binary attendees uncomfortable. We unreservedly apologise for our decision in this situation, which was due to confusion over the remodeling of the school's bathrooms during the convention. One of the Kapcon values is a strong commitment to being welcoming to all our attendees, and we failed to live up to this value here. We've learned from this mistake, and it won't happen again.

2016 Small larp signup

As usual, KapCon is running a number of small larps this year alongside the ordinary tabletop sessions. Because these larps require costuming and casting, we are allowing players to preregister for them.

The larps in question are:

Round 3: LARP: On Display (6 spaces)
Round 6: LARP: Raising the Standards (12 spaces)
Round 7: LARP: On Display (6 spaces)

To ensure everyone has a fair shot, we will be running a mini "shark week". Initial registrations will be taken by email between Monday 30 November and midnight Friday 4 December, after which games will be allocated. Where a game is oversubscribed, the decision will be random.

Following the initial signup period, games will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you would like to preregister for one of these slots, please email kapcon@gmail.com. I'll let you know next week which game you've been allocated to.

Note that there are still spaces in the round 1 and 2 larps (which you sign up for using the registration form, and in the flagship Apotheosis (which you can sign up for here). There's also a host of fantastic tabletops as well, so don't worry about missing out. There will be something good to play regardless.

Kapcon XXV: Call for larps

Kapcon wants your larps!

We are planning to run a larp stream this year, with the aim of providing around 24 player spaces per round. The parameters of running a larp at kapCon are pretty simple: runs in 3 hours, fits in a classroom, 8 - 15 players, minimal set-dressing (because you won't have time to do it between rounds). Please also note that the changing facilities aren't great, so costume-light is an advantage.

We will pre-register players if your game is costumed, to allow you to cast in advance.

If you're interested, please fill out the game registration form

We'd like to have larps for rounds 1 and 2 at least sorted by mid-October for the main launch, and the sooner we have a larp timetable set the sooner we can start getting players.

T-shirt order form

Want a KapCon 2015 t-shirt? You can order one here.

Orders are due by January 4.

Small larp signups

As usual, KapCon is running a number of small larps this year alongside the ordinary tabletop sessions. Because these larps require costuming and casting, we are allowing players to preregister for them.

The larps in question are:

Round 3 (Saturday evening, 5pm - 8pm):
* A Royal Celebration (19 spaces)

Round 5 (Sunday morning, 10am - 1pm)
* Watch the Skies (8 spaces)
* The Universe (Which Others Call The Library) (8 spaces)

Round 6 (Sunday afternoon (2pm - 5pm):
* New Voices in Art (15 spaces)
* The Universe (Which Others Call The Library) (8 spaces)

To ensure everyone has a fair shot, we will be running a mini "shark week". Initial registrations will be taken by email between Thursday 4 December and midnight Monday 8 December, after which games will be allocated. Where a game is oversubscribed, the decision will be random. In rounds where there are multiple options, I am happy to take a first and second preference.

Following the initial signup period, games will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you would like to preregister for one of these slots, please email kapcon@gmail.com. I'll let you know next week which game you've been allocated to.

There is another game likely for round 7, and I'll open registrations for that when I receive a blurb.

Note that there are a host of fantastic tabletops as well, so don't worry about "missing out". There will be something good to play regardless.

Larp registration is now open

This year's KapCon flagship is Crisis Point, a superhero larp covering everything from spandex-wearing caped crusaders to modern gritty and grim antiheroes. You can register for it here. Please remember that you will need to register for the convention as well.

Call for games

KapCon 2015 is officially calling for games. Its 4.5 months until the con, and we've got the first few games up. But as always, we need more. In particular, we need to have at least 8 tabletop games to offer for round one when we open for registrations in October.

We don't care what you run. Our attendees have a huge range of tastes, and you can find players for almost anything. Provided it runs in a three hour session and you tell people what they're in for, we're good.

If you'd like to help us with this, then fill out the form.

We're also calling for small larps. We aim to provide ~24 larp spaces per round this year, so we're after small games in the 8 - 20 player range. Note that you will have to do any set dressing yourself, and that the time available for this is limited, so you may wish to keep it to a minimum. note also that as changing facilities are limited, costume-light games are easier for the players. We will pre-register players if your game is costumed, to allow you to cast in advance.

If you'd like to run a larp, its the same form, which you can fill out here.

If you want to do anything unusual, please check our game legend for guidelines.
